Example
Ex 1:

Divide Rs. 360 in the ratio 4 : 5

Sol:
Sum of the terms of the ratio = 4 + 5
= 9
First part
=
= Rs. 160
Second part
=
= Rs. 200
Ex 2:

Divide Rs. 207 among three friends A, B and C in the ratio

Sol:

Given ratio is .

The L.C.M. of the denominators is 12.

Now multiply each term of the ratio by 12

∴ = 2 : 3 : 4

Sum of the terms of the ratio = (2 + 3 + 4)
= 9
A's share
= Rs. (207 × 2/9)
= Rs. 46
B's share
= Rs. (207 × 3/9)
= Rs. 69
C's share
= Rs. (207 × 4/9)
= Rs. 92
Ex 3:

If A : B = 2 : 3 and B : C = 4 : 17, then find A : B : C.

Sol:

Given A : B = 2 : 3 and B : C = 4 : 17

Now multiply each term of the ratio 4 : 17 by

to make its first term equal to 3.

⇒ B : C = 4 × : 17 × = 3 :

∴ A : B : C = 2 : 3 : = 8 : 12 : 51.
