Bar Graphs

Learning objectives

  • To read Circle graphs and Line graphs
  • To Record date using tally marks

Bar graphs

When numbers are represented in the form of bars, then we get a bar graph, and the length of bars represents a number of objects.

When we don't put pictures, instead we write the name of the colours of marbles, we draw a bar graph.

Bar graphs are useful when data that has to be represented is very large.

Students of class 5 of Cambridge High School are divided into four categories of sports. The sports are swimming, basketball, cricket and badminton.

A number of students in each house are given below in the table.

House Number of students in each house
Swimming 42
Basketball 55
Cricket 45
Badminton 50

It is difficult to draw the pictograph for such large information.

But the above information can be easily represented in the form of a bar graph.

Pictograph

When data is represented in the form of pictures, it is known as a pictograph.

The above information can be represented in pictograph, as shown.

Use the above pictograph to answer the following questions.

1. Find the total number of balls.

2. Which colour ball is the least and the most?

3. By how much the green ball is more than the orange ball?

4. By how much the blue ball is less than the yellow ball?

Exercise 13.1

1. The number of students in each class in a school is

Class V ‐ 35 Class VI ‐ 42 Class VII ‐ 41
Class VIII ‐ 45 Class IX ‐ 38 Class ‐ X = 36

2. A number of students who got 100 marks in English, Hindi, Mathematics, Science of class V are as follows:

English = 10 Hindi = 16 Maths = 20 Science = 13

Represent the information in i) tabular form and ii) a pictograph.

3. Draw tally marks and a bar graph to represent the number of children of class 5 who like following snacks.

Snacks Dhokla Upma Samosa Idli
Number of children 20 12 25 15
