MHD Generator MHD Generator A typical MHD generator with a hot plasma gas flowing through a transverse magnetic field.

MHD Generator:
The Magneto Hydrodynamic generator is the full form of MHD generator. It is a device that produces electrical power. As we observe in conventional generators, this too produces the electrical current by moving a conductor in a magnetic field. The only difference in MHD is that the conductor is not solid, but a fast moving plasma gas.

As the plasma gas passes through the transverse magnetic field, it generates electric field perpendicular to the flow of the gas. It is extracted from the gas using electrodes placed in contact with the gas. This electric field generated by the plasma gas is directly proportional to the speed, electrical conductivity and the magnetic flux density of the gas.

This MHD generator requires lot of magnetic field to generate electricity in practice. The only way to do it is by using super conductor magnets that produce lot of magnetic field, so that sufficient amount of current be generated.

MHD generators have efficiency of around 50 to 60% which is lot more compared to the traditional coal fired generators that have efficiency around 35%. The additional efficiency of MHD is due to the fact that the hot plasma gas after passing through the electrodes, will be directed to the steam turbines, to rotate. Thereby additional efficiency is achieved by MHD. These MHD generators are ecological with coal and sulfur with out polluting the environment.
