We know that electronegativity is the measure of an elements ability to attract electrons towards itself while it is bonded with some other elements. that is, it usually forms negative ions.
Electro positivity is just the opposite. It is the tendency of elements to donate electrons and hence form positive ions and elements which forms positive ions are mostly metallic in nature. Therefore electro positivity goes hand in hand with metallic character. The more electropositive the element the more metallic it is. Usually the trend that follows is that electro positivity decreases along periods and increases down groups.
Alkali metals are the most electropositive elements in the periodic table. This is because they have a single electron in its valence shell and this electron is relatively far from the nucleus of the atom, so it is easily lost, in other words these metals have low ionization energies.
Metallic Character:
Metallic character is the name given to the set of chemical properties associated with elements that are metals. These chemicals
properties result from how readily metals lose their electrons. Metallic character includes the ability to be reduced and the
ability to displace hydrogen from dilute acids.
Metallic character and periodic table trends:
Metallic character decreases as you move across a period in the periodic table from left to right. This occurs as atoms more
readily accept electrons to fill a valence shell than lose them to remove the unfilled shell.
Metallic character increases as we move down the group. This is because electrons become easier to lose as the atomic radius increases, where there is less attraction between the nucleus and the valence electrons because of the increased distance between them.
