Differences between Physical and Chemical changes
Physical change Chemical change
There is always change in state. There may be a change of state.
The change of state may be accompanied by a change of color. A chemical change may lead to change of color of a substance.
No new chemical is formed. New chemicals are formed.
No new gases or water vapor is released from a substance undergoing a physical change. When a substance is undergoing a chemical change, new gases or water vapor may be released from the chemical reaction.
When a physical change occurs, inter molecular bonds are stretched or broken. When a chemical change occurs, both inter and intra molecular bonds are first broken and then rearranged to form new bonds and new molecules.
Energy is absorbed when states change from solid to liquid and liquid to gas. Energy is absorbed in endothermic chemical reactions.
Energy is released when states change from gas to liquid and liquid to solid. Energy is released in exothermic chemical reactions.
