Parts of skeleton system Parts of skeleton system Vertebrate skeleton is composed of two main parts: The axial skeleton and appendicular skeleton.

In the human body, several different systems work together to support life and function. One of the most important of these is the skeletal system.

This collection of bones enables the body to function in the physical world, allowing movement and protecting other organs from damage.

The skeletal system supports and protects the body while giving it shape and form. This system is composed of connective tissues including bone, cartilage, tendons and ligaments. Nutrients are provided to this system through blood vessels that are contained within canals in bone. The skeletal system stores minerals, fats, and produces blood cells. Another major role of the skeletal system is to provide mobility. Tendons, bones, joints, ligaments and muscles work in concert to produce various movements.

Vertebrate skeleton is composed of two main parts:

  • The axial skeleton consists of skull, backbone (vertebral column) and ribcage
  • Appendicular skeleton, consists of limb bones, pectoral and pelvic girdles that anchor the appendages to the axial skeleton. Each appendage has several types of joints that aid in body flexibility and movements.
